Once Upon A Time - Small World 2017, Nigeria

A Story of Impact. A Commitment to Change.

The 2017 Small World charity event marked another meaningful chapter in our journey of giving back. That year, the focus of our collective effort was the construction and development of Meinrad School in Port Harcourt—an initiative aimed at transforming access to quality education for children in the community.

Supporting Meinrad School

Founded on October 6, 2008, Meinrad School began with humble beginnings. Initially operating from a church and later relocating to a health centre, the school faced many challenges before finding its footing. Through resilience and community support, construction of a permanent site began, opening the door to a brighter future for its students.

Thanks to funds raised during Small World events—including the 2017 edition—critical developments became possible. These included:
   •    Building additional classrooms for primary students
   •    Establishing a library and computer room
   •    Creating office space for school administration
   •    Improving overall learning facilities for children

A Lasting Difference

The 2017 initiative was more than a fundraising effort—it was an investment in the future of young learners. By supporting Meinrad School, Small World helped provide children with a safe, nurturing environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive.

Because when we come together with purpose, we don’t just build schools—we build futures

Flavours of Azerbaijan: A Culinary Journey Bridging Cultures - 2018, Azerbaijan

The BA Cultural Center, in collaboration with Foodies and Spice Cook Show in Nigeria, launched an inspiring international initiative titled Flavours of Azerbaijan—a unique culinary and cultural exploration designed to connect two rich food traditions through storytelling, travel, and shared experience.

At the heart of the project was the creation of a documentary film dedicated to Azerbaijani cuisine. The aim extended beyond simply showcasing food; it sought to explore the history, traditions, and cultural identity embedded in dishes from various regions of Azerbaijan. By experiencing these culinary practices firsthand, the team also worked to reinterpret selected recipes through a Nigerian lens, creating a meaningful dialogue between the two cultures.

The journey brought together key figures, including Billura Bernard, founder of the BA Cultural Center, and Geena Ehikodi, Managing Director of Foodies and Spice Nigeria and curator of one of the largest food festivals in the country. Their itinerary took them across Azerbaijan’s culturally rich destinations—Baku, Sheki, and Lahic—each offering distinct culinary traditions and historical depth.

Throughout the trip, the team immersed themselves in local experiences. They participated in food shows, attended the vibrant Novruz Festival celebrations, and connected with members of the Nigerian diaspora living in Baku. These interactions added a personal and human dimension to the project, reinforcing the role of food as a universal language that brings communities together.

A significant highlight of the journey was the meeting with Professor Tahir Amiraslanov, President of the Azerbaijan National Culinary Association and a leading figure in the preservation of Turkic culinary heritage. Over several days, he guided the team through the preparation of traditional Azerbaijani dishes, sharing not only techniques but also the historical narratives and cultural meanings behind each ingredient and recipe. His insights provided invaluable depth to the documentary, anchoring it in authenticity and scholarly knowledge.

Beyond cuisine, Flavours of Azerbaijan embraced a broader cultural mission: to understand the country’s traditions, history, and way of life through its food. Each region visited revealed a different story—of geography, migration, and heritage—reflected in flavors, cooking methods, and communal practices.

This project stands as a testament to the power of cultural exchange. By bringing together Azerbaijani and Nigerian culinary perspectives, it highlights how food can transcend borders, foster mutual understanding, and inspire creativity. The upcoming documentary promises not only to celebrate Azerbaijani gastronomy but also to showcase the innovative fusion that emerges when cultures meet with curiosity and respect.
